New CD! DRAGONCON schedule! Ireland!

Greetings, friends of Emerald Rose!

   Great news for you from the band! We are very excited to tell you that we will be performing our pre-DragonCon set this Friday night, August 28th, at the Crimson Moon Cafe in Dahlonega. Maybe, just maybe, if the stars align and the mail comes on time, we MAY have compies of our new live cd for sale in a 'pre-release' party. We are waiting for a big order to arrive from DiscMakers, and if we have it in hand, we will bring it with us Friday night. The show starts at 8 pm, and tickets are $12 advance, $14 on the day of show. The phone number is 706 864-3982, and reservations are highly recommended. The Crimson Moon is located just off the Main Square in Dahlonega. We will also be performing songs from the new live cd, including the new arrangements of 'Johnny Cope' and 'Castle of Arianrhod'. The band received the newly mastered cd from Discmakers last week and had a chance to give several close listens. The stereo separation on car speakers is truly amazing. I sat in the back of Arthur's car and it sounded like I was sitting onstage in the middle of the band. The instrumentation recorded exceptionally well, and the band was in good voice and energy throughout. We believe our version of 'Caledonia' is going to be well received by Celtic internet and radio, and the raucous version of 'Donald McGillavry' from the Crimson Moon is the best capture of the crowd energy we have every caught on recording! In all, we are very proud of this new cd, and if you enjoy our live shows, we think you will love this cd!

   And so we come to our biggest week of the year... DragonCon in Atlanta is one of the largest Sci-fi/Fantasy conventions in the world, and this year is going to be the biggest ever! William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Patrick Stewart top the list of celebrities coming this year, but for a full roster of stars, check out www.dragoncon.org <http://www.dragoncon.org> ! We are performing all over the convention, so look for us and find out any schedule changes at our Band Table at the Marriott! In the past we have been located by the Hyatt Concourse, where we run sound for the acoustic shows during the day, but this year all of the bands will have their tables moved to the Marriott. Clyde and Logan will be helping with sound at the Hyatt concourse, but look for the band's table at the Marriot for cds and posters or for information about Logan's upcoming tour of Ireland.    As with all things at DragonCon, schedules are approximate and subject to change. When all else is done, we will be chilling at the Band Table at the Marriott!   Early morning or late night, someone will be there, unless we are playing a gig!

IRELAND TOUR!

Logan will be leading the 'Dingle to Donegal Tour' to Ireland in the summer of 2010, and it looks like it will be a grand, yet comfortable adventure! Our travel agent Monica had secured lodging at the much loved Dingle Skellig Hotel for three nights! This exquisite hotel has unbelievable Irish cuisine, a huge Irish breakfast every morning with baked goods from their own ovens, and it's a short walk to Dingle Town proper. Best of all is relaxing in the hot tub on the balcony, offering commanding views of Dingle Bay and the Slieve Mish mountains! The tour runs from June 25 - July 4, 2010, and the basic price is less than $2,500, which includes airfare from Boston, all hotels and entrance fees, Irish breakfast each day, two hotel dinners, and luxury tour bus with an Irish driver/guide. STUPID HOBBIT TRICKS!!!

Emerald Rose are seeking Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves and Humans to perform in a new part of the Evening at Bree Party at DragonCon on Friday night. The 'bit' will be called 'Stupid Hobbit Tricks' and well, that probably says enough right there. If you have a silly (but not dangerous) Tolkien-related thing that you do, email the guys at band@emeraldrose.com or see them Thursday or Friday before Bree at their band table in the Hyatt Concourse. Also seeking representatives from the Dwarven and Hobbit races for the first ever Middle Earth Quaffing Contest! No elves, though. Elves don't quaff - they sip. One representative over the age of 21 from the desired races only please. Quaffing will be done with a non-alcoholic beer substitute of great quality! Excitement! Danger! Prizes!

Emerald Rose Goes Commercial on AMC

Celtic Folk Rockers (and DragonCon performers) Emerald Rose received good news this week from producers at the American Movie Classics television channel. Their original instrumental ‘Unfinished Business’ has been chosen for a national commercial for a show called DVD_TV: The Graduate. The 30 second commercial begins airing on AMC this week on March 9 during the broadcast of DVD_TV: Forrest Gump and will air for the next four weeks. The commercial will be broadcast on satellite and cable channels across the US and marks a new level of success for the band.

The band is busy as ever, gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day area events starting with this week’s Dahlonega Celtic Music Festival, where they will share the billing with Irish supergroup Altan. Emerald Rose are featured performers in Atlanta’s St. Pat’s celebrations with shows at Underground Atlanta and several Irish pubs in the Atlanta area. Brian Sullivan of Emerald Rose will open

Award winning Scottish songwriter Jim Malcolm, who has toured the world as guitarist and lead singer for the famed Scottish band Old Blind Dogs, will now bring his acclaimed solo show to The Crimson Moon in Dahlonega. Malcolm was named Songwriter of the Year in 2004, the same year Old Blind Dogs received the Scottish Folk Band of the Year by the Scots Trad Music Society. He has twice performed for Prince Charles at the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, and is one of the best loved voices in contemporary Scottish music.
Jim Malcolm was brought up in Perthshire and Angus and was steeped in the traditional music of Scotland from an early age. He learned to play guitar while at school and by his early twenties was winning songwriting competitions and playing in folk clubs all over Scotland.
His career began to take off when he hosted the open stage at Edinburgh Folk Festival, and there secured a contract with Greentrax for his first solo album, Sconeward. Acclaimed by critics and chosen as one of the year's best by Radio Scotland's folk programmes Travelling Folk and Celtic Connections, the album established Jim as one of the leading songwriters in the traditional idiom in Scotland. He was dubbed: "The new male voice of Scotland."
Malcolm joined Old Blind Dogs, one of Scotland’s most popular folk acts in 1999, contributing his talents on some of the band’s most popular albums, including ‘The World’s Room’, ‘The Gab of Mey’ and the award winning ‘Fit?’ Simultaneously maintaining a prolific solo career, Malcolm has released seven independent cds, including the brilliant ‘Live at Glenfarg’, one of the best representations of his works available. Brian Sullivan, well known to local audiences as lead guitarist and singer for Emerald Rose, will open the show with a selection of songs from Ireland, Scotland and the Americas. Sullivan began performing solo shows at the Crimson Moon last July, and has since shared the stage with Irish singer Julee Glaub and Celtic guitar master Robin Bullock. He has been a featured performer at the Blue Sky concert series in Gainesville and now performs at venues and events in North Georgia. This is a special newsletter to remind you of Logan's solo gig, with surprise guest appearances by other members of Emerald Rose, this Sunday, March 18. Celtic Guitar Master Robin Bullock – Live in Dahlonega!

The Crimson Moon Café in Dahlonega will present a concert performance and guitar workshop by acclaimed guitarist Robin Bullock on Sunday, March 18th. This is the first Dahlonega appearance for the world famous Celtic instrumentalist, and offers an excellent ending to the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Robin will present a workshop in Celtic fingerstyle guitar from 2 – 4 pm on Sunday afternoon, followed by a concert later that evening in the Crimson Moon Café, starting at 7 pm. Brian Sullivan and members of Emerald Rose will open, presenting a selection of traditional Celtic songs to celebrate the holiday. The Guitar Workshop will be limited to ten people, and the cost will be $35. The concert is a separate event and will begin a 7 pm. Tickets can be bought in advance for $12, or at the door for $15. Robin Bullock is a prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist, whose virtuosity on guitar, cittern and mandolin blends the ancient melodies of the Celtic lands and their vigorous Appalachian descendants into one powerful musical vision. The 17th-century harp tunes of legendary Irish bard Turlough O'Carolan, the spirited jigs and reels of rural Ireland, the haunting ballads of the southern Appalachians and evocative original compositions all find a musical common ground in Robin's music, where lightning-fast fingerwork one moment is perfectly balanced with tender, quiet intimacy the next. A warm, friendly presence onstage, Robin effortlessly creates a magical world for the audience with his multi-instrumental wizardry, taking them on a journey to the heart and soul of Celtic and American traditions.

Originally rising to prominence as a founding member of the innovative acoustic world-music trio Helicon (winners of the Association for Independent Music's prestigious INDIE Award for Best Seasonal Recording), Robin's solo career has won him three Washington Area Music Association WAMMIE Awards, a Governor's Award from the Maryland State Arts Council, and a feature broadcast on National Public Radio's hugely popular Celtic music program "The Thistle and Shamrock." Robin's apprenticeship years were spent at fiddlers' conventions, bluegrass festivals and Irish seisuns, mastering the subtleties of a half-dozen instruments in both American and Celtic styles. Today, Robin is recognized as one of the few musicians who can so successfully blend the ancient airs and dance tunes of the Celtic lands with the roots music traditions of the "New World."

In 2000, Robin relocated to France, and now lives in the tiny village of Tripleval, on the Seine river northwest of Paris. He continues to tour and record on both sides of the Atlantic, performing solo and in duos with guitarist Steve Baughman and flute player Michel Sikiotakis. He is an acclaimed multi–instrumental teacher at the well known Swannanoa Gathering held annually at Warren Wilson College near Asheville, North Carolina. In response to the number of questions I have received of late:

Are Emerald Rose playing at the Georgia Celtic Day?

No, we are booked in Maryland that weekend. They always wait til the last minute to call us, so they missed us again.

Is there going to be a North Georgia Celtic Festival this year?

No. The band is concentrating on recording two new albums in time for DragonCon this year. We have not received any word from the city of Gainesville that they are interested in sponsorship, so we have moved on. It was a great time, and it is possible that I may be interested in the idea of producing a Celtic Festival here at Starbridge, but probably not this year. We had a great new stage built and it is begging for some great music. You may or may not know that the festival was produced by funds that came straight from the pockets of Logan, Danae, Clyde, Larry and the Emerald Rose coffers? We made it float through the vendors fees and selling ads, door sales and very, very small sponsorships. We just can't afford the time and money this year. We offered to partner with the city, but they were not interested.

Are Emerald Rose going to ICON?

No. We have heard nothing at all from ICON. We suggest you contact the convention organizers and request to have us back if you would like to see us there. Apparently they had a big changeover in staff and they don't remember us.

Are Emerald Rose going to DragonCon this year?

We are never allowed to say until they put us on the website, but if they let us in, we will be there! BEST GIG IN THE WORLD! We have been invited to play at several parties, including Evening at Bree, but we have to wait until the Dragon speaks to announce anything for sure. Last year we played six shows! Of all the performances though, I enjoyed playing for the Harry Potter party the most that year. Very relaxed, very fun.

Will Emerald Rose lead a tour of Ireland this year?

Likewise with the Ireland tour... we have to stay home this year and get our musical work done. The Euro is still very strong, and the British pound is RIDICULOUS at the current exchange rate. It's almost two to one for the dollar, and things are cheap there to start with. We had entertained ideas of going to Wales and/or Scotland, but the exchange rate kills that idea. We may look at the idea of another tour to Ireland sometime next year. We barely had enough people last time and the band took a real beating financially. You see, we can't get paid to play over there, there are dozens of great musicians everywhere, and we can't sell cds. It's like taking a very interesting but expensive vacation, except we are really working most of the time! We always have a blast - it's hard not to have a blast in Ireland - but it is NOT a cheap thrill!

All right, I think that covers the most popular items. Sorry if we disappoint anyone's plans, but we are holding our nose to the grindstone this year to produce some quality new music for you all. We hope you will enjoy it when it finally comes around!

St. Patrick's Celebrations

St. Patrick’s Day season is upon us, and the band has been working hard in the studio. As we prepare to hit the road again for Irish month, we want to let you all know about some upcoming gig dates and some of the projects we are planning.

Saturday, March 3 at 8 pm Emerald Rose and our good friends the BorderCollies will perform an all-Celtic show at the Historic Holly Theater in Dahlonega. Tickets are $12. The Holly is a beautiful restored theater with excellent acoustics. The BorderCollies have performed with ER several times, and they now have a new fiddler!

Friday, March 16 6 – 9 pm Kenny’s Alley in Underground Atlanta. Come party with us in Downtown Atlanta as part of the celebration sponsored by Underground and the Atlanta St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Saturday, March 17 1 pm and 5 pm Morgan Square Downtown Spartanburg SC

Free festival is loaded with entertainment including music, contests and children's activities. And yes, there will be lots of food! Highland Brewery had a truck there last year, and the band had a blast! We’ll be there all day long to party with the good folks of Spartanburg, so come on out and throw it down in the heart of the city.

Sunday, March 18 is a very special day! Celtic Master Guitarist Robin Bullock will be appearing at the Crimson Moon, with Logan opening as a ‘solo’ act. Robin is a world class multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bouzouki, and mandolin to name a few) and has been an instructor for many years at the famed Swannanoa Gathering, teaching guitar and bouzouki classes for both Guitar Week and Celtic week. Logan studied Celtic Fingerstyle Guitar and Bouzouki under Robin last summer at Swannanoa and felt he would be a great treat for Emerald Rose fans. How good is he? Last fall he played Kennedy Center - by himself! The Baltimore City Paper calls him a “Celtic Guitar god”! Fortunate circumstances allowed for a great cap to the St. Patty’s weekend! GUITAR WORKSHOP! March 18 2-4 pm $35 Crimson Moon, Dahlonega

Robin will be teaching a workshop for guitar players on Celtic Fingerstyle Guitar from 2 – 4 pm. This is a great opportunity for any of you guitar players out there (of any level) to get a close up and personal look at the playing style of a true master of the instrument. Logan credits Robin for really changing and expanding his playing ability on both guitar and mandola, opening up new perspectives on the instrument. Credited as one of Swannanoa’s best guitar teachers, this would be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

We want to make this night special! Logan will perform some new arrangements of traditional Irish and Scottish songs, some of which he hasn’t performed yet in public. Some of the boys in Emerald Rose will be there to help out with some duos and instrumentals, so look for something different than the standard ER song list! We are working hard in the studio, and lots of stuff for the comedy cd is coming along nicely. The D & D song (Never Split the Party) and the T’Pau song (Vulcan Rubdown) are definitely on the list, and we have some initial tracks down. Songwriting processes continue, and the computer has (sort of) behaved during the past couple of weeks. Keep your fingers crossed, and wish us luck! We have some tour dates for the Maryland area and Florida coming up for later in the year, so keep an eye on our gigs page! See you at the show!

Greetings friends!

Emerald Rose would like to take a moment to say thanks to all the great people around the country who have made 2006 our most successful year ever! That's pretty good considering how much fun we have had in years past!
This year saw us touring longer and farther than ever before, and thanks go out to everyone who offered us their hospitality and support for all of our gigs far from home. We also want to thank all of our loyal fans who have come out to party with us here at home...you have made us a phenomena in our home town! We also want to thank our families for holding down the fort while we were on our quests, from Florida to New York, and all the way to Ireland and back!
This year saw some great career advancements for our band as well, along with the manifestation of some of our favorite wishes. Our new band bus has been a great trooper, allowing us to all travel in one vehicle in comfort and style. Our new Bose sound system is granting us some great new experiences in live sound, and our recording computer is being upgraded to start handling the load of work that will soon come its' way. We will be working on new material, starting next week, and planning our recording schedule to try for two separate projects this year. Our soundtrack work with 'Ringers' and 'Done the Impossible' has opened new doors of opportunity for us, and we have begun making inroads into touring to more sci-fi/fantasy conventions. It's been a very good year for us, and we want to thank you all for your continued support and well wishes.

If you plan to join us at the Crimson Moon for New Year's Eve, you should make your reservations immediately. Only about ten seats are currently available at this writing, and tickets are selling fast! The Irish Feast has been decided and the menu is as follows:

We have told some of you about the situation with touring these days. Unfortunately, travel expenses have increased so much these days that the old model of touring in pubs and small gatherings has become unaffordable. Look for us to tour less this year so that we can spend more time in the studio, writing and recording. We have been looking for a regular gig down in the Atlanta area to stay in touch with our friends down there, but so far have found the area lacking in approprate venues. If you know of a great bar in the North Atlanta area that has music, good beer and a great staff, let us know by dropping us a line at band@emeraldrose.com !

Hello Everybody!

Emerald Rose here with some additional information about our upcoming gig schedule!

We will be playing at Cranberry Corners this Friday evening from 6:30 until around 8:30 pm, just down the block from the Crimson Moon on the square in Dahlonega. The show coincides with the lighting of the Christmas lights in Dahlonega and will be sure to crowded and chaotic. Cranberry Kathy, as she has dubbed herself, is a long-time friend and supporter of the band. Her gift store is running a special "Men in Skirts, Women in Pajamas" promotion that night. Anyone who comes in wearing sleep attire or kilts get 25% off of their purchases. It should be a fun night, and one of your only opportunities to hear us sing 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer'. Hey! What are you laughing at?

We'll be down in Atlanta at the UU Church next Thursday, December 7, sharing the bill with our friends Coyote Run. The Coyotes have been touring extensively these past months and we look forward to seeing what they have up their collective sleeves. Show starts at 8 pm, admission is $10. This will be our only Atlanta area show for the rest of the year. The stage is 'in the round' so there are no bad seats in the hall!

We'll be back at the Crimson Moon on Dec 9 to throw it down in the old hometown. Crimson Moon will also be hosting us for New Year's Eve, serving a special Irish Menu with a champagne celebration at midnight. Check out the details at www.thecrimsonmoon.com . If you plan to come to New Year's, by all means reserve your seats soon. As of last week, a third of the tickets had already sold. The Moon gigs have been really fun recently, with people driving in from other states to party with us. The new chef, Kelly Finucan, is also an old friend of the band, and we LOVE her cooking. The stage is small, but the venue is very intimate and we have been having a really fun time performing there these past months. Here's a shout-out to the crazy folks from the Ireland trips who have joined us these past few times.....you folks are a blast, and having you all party there has been great fun!

We will be playing a special free show in Dahlonega at the Ice Skating Pavilion in Hancock Park on Dec. 22, performing a Winter Solstice show by special invitation of the City of Dahlonega. We feel special! Sure, it sounds hokey, but the Ice Rink the PLACE TO BE in Dahlonega this month! Truthfully, our kids don't care if the band plays...they just want to skate! We are very honored that the city has invited us on this special day and we always enjoy playing in Hancock Park, just down the street from the Crimson Moon. When else can you ice skate to live Emerald Rose music?

You might notice that all of our gigs are local this month. We are working hard on special projects in the studio and will soon begin the long and laborous task of recording, writing, and recording some more. We are HOPING, just hoping right now, that we may produce two major studio projects before DragonCon next year. And still like each other! Keep your fingers crossed for us! Clyde has managed to resurrect our recording computer, pimped it with new hardware, and we are ready to roll in style. We have some fun projects in mind, so put on your seat belts!

Our next big show is in Romulus Michigan for the ConClave convention. We get to pester Voltaire for a weekend...always fun!
